As the conflict in Syria enters its fifth year, a political solution is still to be found. Human rights violations and abuses continue to occur in the context of widespread insecurity and in disregard of international law, international humanitarian law, and human rights law. Over 200,000 people have been killed and over one million injured. More than half of all Syrians have been forced to leave their homes, often multiple times, making Syria the largest displacement crisis globally with an estimated 4.1 million people seeking refuge outside the country. The UN also estimates that 7.6 million people are internally displaced and a total of 12.2 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance within Syria, 46% of whom are children.
